One evening, his secretary unexpectedly dropped in on the naturalist and inventor Kempelen Farkas. The upset young man said that the Austrian police are still investigating the case of the Hungarian Jacobin movement. He has been subpoenaed as a witness and is likely to be expected to testify against one of his friends of principle. He also assumed that the indictment calls for the death sentence for all the accused. The secretary wanted to hand over some pamphlets to his master for safekeeping, but Kempelen refused at first. In the meantime, new visitors arrived at the scientist: Professor Kasper and police councilor Sonnenthal. With his peculiar methods, Kasper wants to persuade the scientists of the empire to declare their loyalty to the emperor, while Sonnenthal warns public figures behaving suspiciously.
