
A detective is forced to confront difficult home truths about his past, and his present, while on the trail of a serial killer in rural northern Finland.

Lauri, a young crime detective, is saved from couples therapy when he is sent on an assignment to his childhood surroundings in Northern Finland, where the conservative small town of Varjakka is shaken by two murders. He is joined by a partner, senior detective Sanna, a pleasure-seeking woman who has never been so far north before.

The people of Varjakka search for a missing father of a family. At the same time, the detectives' work is hindered by personal problems: Sanna is contacted by an unexpected party and a friend from the past blames Lauri for the misfortunes. The atmosphere among the townspeople starts to turn tense.

Lauri makes a breakthrough in the case and consoles a shell-shocked Sanna. Violence mounts while the local religious community grieves.

The killer masters the art of diversion, and Lauri and Sanna have to deliver some sad news. Lauri gets an unexpected visitor and hope of change awakens. A strange accident by the seashore summons the media to Varjakka.

Are there two killers, and do they share a common enemy? There is a rift in the detectives' relationship and Sanna's whole life turns around. Lauri takes a journey into the past.

The religious community is assembled, and Lauri's old scars rip open. Sanna has to relive a past trauma. Is forgiveness possible?







Lauri Räihä and Sanna Tervo return to Varjakka when the village's former police chief is found murdered in the forest. They get the help of chief inspector Jussi Ritola, who is weighed down by a betrayal from twenty years ago.

After the second body, Lauri and Sanna follow the investigation of a former police chief and meet Leena Niemitalo, who is in prison. A female theologian takes advantage of the Lestadians' confusion.

The arrival of a member of parliament in Varjakka puts pressure on all sides, and the problems in Sanna and Lauri's private lives do not help the investigation. Leena secretly asks her daughter for help with a strange task.

Ritola is moved at the funeral of the former police chief and Lauri hears about the illegitimate child of the deceased. The disappearance of Sanna brings Varjakka to the center of the country's attention. The interrogation of the prime suspect makes surprising progress.

The DNA test result stirs the deck again. Pressure is mounting on Laur and Ritola is of no help. The MP, who Aaro is persecuting, begins to counter-attack. Meeri surprises Ritola and emotions take over.

Lauri decides to survive alone. Aaro and Meeri work out their differences and decide to seek justice. Lauri is furious when he hears his childhood friend's confession. Sanna is confronted with questions of life and death.
