Overview
1920: after the bankruptcy of their Bordeaux vineyard, the Vallogne family goes into exile in Guyana where they once invested in an apparently flourishing land. In reality, it turns out to be an unexploitable swamp. There, they are welcomed by the family's former sharecropper, Léon Bousqueyrolle. Barely arrived, the young son of Constance and Joseph succumbs to white fever. Constance then sinks into a deep depression. For her part, Mathilde is working on a dike project to drain the marshes. Meanwhile, Pierre Vallogne escapes from the penal colony where he was incarcerated and takes refuge with Clélia Debarbera, the owner of a gambling house. This news makes Constance smile again while everyone believes in Pierre's death.
