Set in the near future, Cleverman is a startlingly original drama rooted in Aboriginal mythology. The series depicts a deeply conflicted and anxious society, fearful of a minority group living among them, endowed with extraordinary physical traits. One young man--The Cleverman--struggles with his own power and the responsibility to unite this divided world, but he must first overcome a deep estrangement from his older brother.

In Australia, the discovery of a race of supposed subhumans, "Hairies," leads to their ghettoization to the poorer parts of Sydney and widespread prejudice and imprisonment. While one family struggles to survive, two human half-brothers are split when their uncle gives one of them the powers of the shaman--the Cleverman--but the brother who is chosen doesn't want the responsibility.

Koen and Blair break into a secret lab to find the woman whispering in Koen's head. Meanwhile, Jarrod asks Charlotte to visit the clinic one more time, while Waruu and Harry prepare to break into a secret government containment facility.

Jarrod approaches Waruu and Koen individually, and learns that Koen is the new Cleverman. Meanwhile, Latani makes her way to the Zone, where Djukara is recovering after his injuries escaping from the containment facility.

A new massacre by the Namorrodo is blamed on the Hairies, and tensions in the city rise. Nerida learns about Waruu's affair and confronts him about it, while Koen learns more about his gift when McIntyre pays him a visit.

After Ash's death, Koen doubts his powers as the Cleverman. However, he may be the only one who can save a young Hairyboy. Meanwhile, Jarrod arranges for Charlotte to secretly receive some of the Hairy serum, and Matthews makes plans for the future.

As the CA prepares to clear out the Zone, Waruu faces a momentous decision when he learns what Jarrod has in mind for the Hairies. Meanwhile, Koen realizes his true power and battles the Namorrodor.

The CA attack on the Zone kills Koen and captures the residents, but a new Hairy soon rescues them. Meanwhile, Koen's powers bring him back to life, and he and Aunty try to help the escaped Zone residents. A new minister takes over after Matthews' death, and has her own plans for the Hairies.

Waruu takes steps to conceal his mutation from the government once the new genetic scanners are implemented. Meanwhile, Charlotte begins to suspect what Jarrod has done to her, and Koen meets a familiar face from his past.
