After Iron Man stops an A.I.M. arms trade, Hank Pym talks with Mad Thinker to see what he meant when he referred to the villains in the super prisons as soon being free. All four of the prisons then break down and each hero deals with this. Meanwhile, Leonard Samson is exposed to Gamma radiation when the Cube deactivates and is injured by Zzzax. Hulk escapes with Samson and heads to the nearest civilized area. Graviton escapes the Raft and seeks revenge on Nick Fury.

A flashback to 10 years before reveals Graviton's origin. In the present, Iron Man is outnumbered by old enemies at the Vault. To escape and fight Graviton, Tony self-destructs the Vault, but his armor was damaged and he radios a replacement from his Chicago tower. Thor, Hank Pym, and Wasp try to fight Graviton. Later, they are joined by Hulk and Iron Man and with their combined power they defeat Graviton and form the Avengers in order to catch the 74 escaped supervillians that escaped the four prisons.

The Enchantress uses her magic to manipulate the Hulk into distrusting the rest of the Avengers and attacking Thor.

The Avengers discover the frozen body of Captain America and revive him, leading Baron Zemo to attack, seeking revenge against Cap for infecting him with Virus X.

Furious at Tony Stark for buying up his company, Simon Williams seeks revenge by undergoing a dangerous AIM procedure, overseen by MODOC and the Grim Reaper (Williams' brother), which turns him into a being of pure ion energy.

The Black Panther seeks the Avengers' aid in freeing his African nation of Wakanda from usurper king Man-Ape, and stopping Hydra agents Ulysses Klaw and the Grim Reaper from stealing Wakanda's supply of vibranium.

When The Leader creates a bubble of gamma radiation emanating from the Cube that mutates any human it touches, the Avengers team up with Doc Sampson to stop him. Meanwhile, Hawkeye infiltrates a Hydra base in order to capture Black Widow.
