Overview
In 1918, Mao Zedong, together with Xiao Zisheng, Cai Hesen, He Shuheng and other members of the Xinmin Society, came to Beijing to prepare for a work-study program in France. During his stay in Beijing, he met Li Dazhao, Chen Duxiu and others, leaders of the New Culture Movement, and came into contact with Marxism for the first time. His thoughts entered a vast new world. Mao Zedong gave up studying in France and returned to Changsha, where he taught at Xiuye Primary School. When the May 4th Movement broke out, Hunan Governor Zhang Jingyao went against the grain and violently suppressed the patriotic people. Mao Zedong contacted all strata of society and openly launched the banner of "driving tension". Although he won victory, it did not change the current situation of Sanxiang, which was characterized by military and political corruption, bureaucratic chaos, and people's livelihood. In confusion, Mao Zedong left Hunan and came to Pingxiang, where he went deep into the working class and explored the path to a successful revolution. Various doctrines clashed in the Xinmin Society, and ideological fissures gradually occurred among the members. Finally, Xiao Zisheng boarded the ship to France, Peng Huang committed suicide, and Mao Zedong and He Shuheng embarked on the journey to participate in the "National Congress" of the Communist Party of China. They were like the water of the Xiang River rolling north, joining the historical torrent that changed China's destiny.
