Campos dos Goytacazes, northern Rio de Janeiro, 1870. Judge Queiroz Antunes, a slave owner, is a man of integrity, member of the Conservative Party, who believes in the possible abolition of slavery. The death of his son Antônio, with abolitionist tendencies – when he was helping a black man to escape from his farm – triggers a deep crisis in him, leading him to question his principles, beliefs and political options. On his deathbed, the son asks his father to place a slave child, Bento, in his place. Professor Aimée Lovato is an idealistic young woman who participates in the abolitionist movement. Her first love was Fernando, a revolutionary who dedicated his life to fighting for black people. By the irony of fate, Aimée replaces Fernando's love with that of Queiroz Antunes, a man with a totally different ideology than hers, in addition to being older than her, conservative and a slave owner. From this antagonistic love arise the conflicts of this strong, imperative, determined and down-to-earth woman.
