Overview
At the end of the Qing Dynasty, when Cixi was dying, she called the Sihe Troupe to perform in the palace. The students of the Sihe Troupe, Zeng Tingfang and Huadan Qu Shilang, were rewarded with high salaries. On his deathbed, the old leader of the Sihe Class, Lian Wu, passed the position of leader of the Sihe Class to his disciple Zeng Tingfang, and betrothed his two daughters, Lian Qinru and Lian Qinyu, to Zeng Tingfang and Qu Shilang respectively. Zeng Tingfang and Lian Qinru got married and inherited the Sihe class family business. Qu Julang married Lian Qinyu, a vindictive enemy, and the two had been quarreling for a lifetime because of their personalities and ideals. In order to keep the Sihe Class in troubled times, Zeng Tingfang fought against the ruffian Sun Dapao, fought with the rival Wuqing Class, and dealt with the Japanese Nikaido Shang. The Japanese army invited the Sihe Troupe to perform in Japan. Zeng Tingfang resisted with death, and Qu Shilang also grew a beard to show his ambition. After the liberation of Peiping, the Sihe Class's new production "The Meeting of Heroes" was staged and received high praise. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Sihe Troupe led by Zeng Tingfang ushered in a new dawn of the Republic and the spring of the opera world after half a century of ups and downs.
