The year is 2151 and Commander Henderson and the crew of H.M.S. Camden Lock are protecting Britain's interests in a changing galaxy. This week that means persuading alien cultures to move their businesses to the Peterborough enterprise zone. This would be difficult enough if there wasn't a lethal, man-eating parasite loose on the ship. Which there is.
Commander Henderson and his crew are making First Contact with the alien civilisation of Queppu. The first rule of First Contact is: never, ever get romantically involved with a beautiful alien princess. So Henderson falls head over heels in love.Meanwhile, the ship has been left in the sole charge of Technical Officer Jeffers. Big mistake.
Everyone on board the spaceship H.M.S. Camden Lock has the weekend off to mark Gary Neville Day - the holiday celebrating the 21st century footballer and inventor of artificial gravity.Vine has just bought an entire planet in an internet auction. He insists it was a bargain, and not the useless, poisonous ball of clay it appears to be.Teal is looking forward to dining with Henderson at the Officers' Dinner - perhaps a little bit too much.
The ship is hosting delicate peace talks between the Lallakkiss and the Bulaahg, two feuding alien species. When Henderson deploys his ingenuity and charm to hurry things along, the species unite and declare war on Britain. With Starbase unwilling to send back-up, it's the Camden Lock against 900 enemy ships.
While hunting for drug smugglers, the crew cross paths with Clare Winchester, the famous round-the-galaxy solo spacewoman. Concerned that she might have gone a bit loopy, and excited by the thought of meeting a real celebrity, Henderson drops in for a extremely ill-advised visit. Things aren't made any easier when the ship's cyborg pilot, Sandstrom, picks up a computer virus called 'Ploppymouth Two' which renders her useless. And very rude.
The crew fail a routine psychological test and the Space Marshal isn't happy. He calls for a category J Inspection, but no ship has ever passed one before. In despair, Henderson hands command to York. The crew respond by rioting.Meanwhile, wise aliens are offering Vine the chance to become an immortal galactic supreme being. Will he join them?
Henderson is invited to join Britain's premier space-o-batics team (a Red Arrows for space) led by Squadron Leader Mason, who twenty years ago had a fling with Teal. Mason is jealous of Teal's feelings for Henderson and decides to take drastic action. Meanwhile, York reveals the results of his terrifying scientific experiment and Vine has enlisted Jeffers into injuring him in a 'workplace accident' so he can be sent back to Earth.
When presented with a mysterious object Henderson can't help but try to return it to its rightful owners despite York's warnings that it's a classic hero trap. The three senior officers find themselves on a forest moon suddenly surrounded by aliens ready for revenge. After narrowly being avoiding destruction last year they have acquired new technology and are ready to strike back by putting Henderson, York and Teal into a reality TV gladiatorial contest.
The daughter of the Space Admiral has run away avoiding university and Henderson is ordered to get her back. Meanwhile both Vine and Jeffers have taken a shine to the young student and fight for her heart in the only way they know how - a duel. Arabella steals a shuttle craft and elopes with Jeffers leading them both into mortal danger.
York is sacked from Space Force after a short trial in the ship's Justice Room and Teal is promoted in his place and left in charge of the ship. Unfortunately, the Red Shiny Robots of Vortis are about to attack and harvest the minds of the crew. Will York attempt a daring rescue or can Jeffers figure a way out of danger?
The crew discover the Dreamgate, one of the most dangerous devices in the Universe, which gives its owner the power to infiltrate other people's dreams without their knowledge. Henderson and York wander into Vine's dream of a pub in the mid 1990s, but when Vine wakes up they become trapped inside his head. Can the rest of the crew bring them back from 1995?
Entrusted with leading the convoy guarding Britain's new super-weapon, the Camden Lock's position is betrayed. There is a traitor aboard and all the officers are under suspicion. There is desperate race against time to find the mole before Earth is destroyed. Only Vine's new gadget offers any respite from the mounting tension.
