When a young waterbender, named Katara, and her brother, Sokka, discover a giant iceberg while fishing for food around their homestead at the South Pole, they discover that there is a boy, named Aang, inside. Aang, they discover, is an airbender, (a group of people which were thought to be extinct). However, after a string of unfortunate events which puts the village in harm's way, they soon learn that there is more to him than meets the eye. Will Aang prove his hidden abilities, or will he be thought as just a child?
After Aang accidentally sets off a Fire Nation trap, he is banished from the South Pole. Soon after Prince Zuko attacks the Southern Water Tribe seeking to capture the Avatar. Aang returns and surrenders to save the Water Tribe. But can Sokka and Katara save the world's only chance at peace, or will Zuko keep his ultimate prize?
Aang is excited about finally going home again for the first time in one hundred years, but he is shocked to find out that the temple is deserted. Aang tells Sokka and Katara about his childhood as they explore the temple, but they soon discover something that Aang never expected, also Aang discovers a new friend that joins them throughout their journey. Meanwhile, Prince Zuko must make repairs to his ship, and the only way he can do it is to dock his ship at his rival's naval base
As one of Aang's little detours, the group heads toward the island of Kyoshi. But soon they learn that the townspeople don't trust foreigners at all; however, when Aang proves to them that he is the Avatar they are treated as guests of honor. Katara wants to get some supplies and leave as soon as possible, while Aang is enjoying his time as a celebrity. Little do they know, though, that the Fire Nation has tracked them down. Also, Sokka meets and trains with a female warrior named Suki. Will Aang be able to save the village from the wrath of the Fire Nation?
Aang takes Katara and Sokka back to a favorite place he used to go to when he was younger, the Earth Kingdom City of Omashu. But when they break the law they are taken to the King to get their punishment. The eccentric King of Omashu puts Aang through a series of challenges and if he fails Katara and Sokka will be engulfed in a crystal cocoon.
When the group arrives at a small Earth Kingdom mining town, they see an earthbender, named Haru, who is practicing his ability, but he runs away when Katara tries to confront him about it. They soon learn that the Fire Nation has taken over the town, that earthbending is forbidden and all earthbenders are taken away to an offshore prison. However, when an elderly man is trapped in a collapsed mine, Katara urges Haru to use his powers to save the man's life, but then, the old man reports Haru to the authorities. Katara blames herself for his predicament and she vows to rescue him, but will she succeed?
When Aang is assigned to help defend a town from a monster that has been plaguing the town, his lack of ability and knowledge becomes obvious, as he doesn't know what to do. However, when Sokka tries to rush to Aang's rescue during the fight, he himself becomes captured and is taken away by the monster, which turns out to be from the spirit world. Aang promises Katara that he'll find Sokka and bring him back, but with Aang even doubting himself, will he be capable of finding where the monster went?
Aang learns that he must go to the Fire Nation temple during the winter solstice if he wishes to speak with Avatar Roku to see what he must do. However, with Prince Zuko on his trail while he heads straight into the heart of the nation who wants him captured, he realizes that this isn't going to be an easy task. Will Aang be able to talk to Avatar Roku before Zuko finds him?
After Katara attempts to teach Aang waterbending, she is desperate to improve her abilities. When Katara inadvertently stumbles across a waterbending scroll that can help improve her ability while Aang is looking at a pirate's store, she decides to steal it after she realizes that she couldn't hope to afford it; but will she be capable of stealing from the pirates without causing herself and her friends trouble?
While traveling towards the North Pole, the group almost gets captured by the Fire Nation. However, when a charismatic young man and his band of rebels attack the Fire Nation's camp and rescue them, the gang learns that the rebels are trying to resist the Fire Nation's motives to expand their territory. Katara and Aang really enjoy their time with the band of rebels, but Sokka soon discovers that they aren't as noble as meets the eye
While on their way to the North Pole, Aang and his friends arrive at a giant canyon where two groups of refugees are bickering over who should get to go across. Aang decides to walk across with the two groups to ensure they don't fight one another. However, he soon learns that the two tribes have been feuding for one hundred years and they both believe their actions are justified. But when the predators inside the canyon start to come out, Aang is stuck trying to defend both tribes from each other and the vicious wildlife.
Aang, Katara and Sokka have run out of money. Katara suggests Sokka get a job, and coincidentally, they meet a fisherman who is looking for someone to help him out with his fishing. But when the fisherman recognizes Aang as the Avatar, he blames Aang's absence for all of the troubles of the last 100 years, and Aang runs away on his glider. Katara follows on Appa, and when she finds him, Aang begins to reveal life before he was frozen in the iceberg. Meanwhile, Prince Zuko and Lieutenant Jee get into a fight, but Iroh breaks it up. Soon thereafter, the Lieutenant and the rest of the crew gain a newfound respect for their leader after learning of his past.
After Sokka and Katara get sick due to being in the storm, Aang seeks out a cure and discovers he needs some frozen frogs in order to get them cured. Meanwhile, Zhao has been promoted to Admiral and he is using the Fire Nation's best men to capture Aang, and he eventually succeeds. All hope seems lost for Aang and his friends, but there may just be a glimmer of hope when a strange blue spirit masked figure comes to Aang's rescue, but who could it possibly be?
When the group tries to help a man who is being attacked by a platypus-bear, they discover that the local town has a fortuneteller named Aunt Wu in it, who has been forecasting the town's fate for years, but when Sokka and Aang discover one of the fortuneteller's most vital predictions is dead wrong, they have to develop a plan to convince the stubborn townspeople that their beloved Aunt Wu was wrong. Will they manage to save the village in time, or will Aang fail in his duty as the avatar?
Aang feels neglected as Katara and Sokka reunite with Bato, an old friend of their father's from the South Pole. They begin to reminisce on their times in the past while they wait for a message to arrive from their father; in which Aang believes Katara and Sokka will abandon him and go out to find their father should the message arrive. However, when the messenger gives Aang the message to give to Bato, Aang betrays his friends in a way Katara or Sokka could never imagine. However, when Zuko recruits a bounty hunter named June to track Aang down. His friendship is put to the test, as he must deal with the fact that he betrayed his friends while defending himself from yet another fight.
When Aang and his friends go to a Fire Nation town so that Aang can witness some firebending, their plan soon goes awry when it's discovered that he is the Avatar. Fortunately, he's rescued by an individual who serves a firebending master named Jeong Jeong who has abandoned the Fire Nation, so Aang attempts to use this time to attempt to learn how to firebend. However, when the firebending master refuses to even see Aang, will Aang be able to prove he's ready to learn how to firebend despite the fact that he lacks discipline?
When Aang and his friends hear rumors about surviving airbenders, they decide to stop by the Northern Air Temple on their way to the North Pole to see for themselves. What they find is a bunch of people who aren't airbenders, but have mastered the art of gliding. This upsets Aang because they have been defacing the temple. However, there was one part of the temple, where nobody has been able to enter and what Aang and his friends discover inside spells oncoming conflict.
When Aang tries to find the north pole, he is found by the north pole waterbenders instead. When they are taken there, Aang and Katara are eager to find a waterbending master, only to find that girls are not allowed to learn waterbending. Katara decides to show everyone what she can do. Meanwhile, Sokka falls in love with the tribe's princess.
Zhao begins to launch his attack against the Northern Water Tribe. As the walls of the besieged city begin to fall, the Avatar taps into the spirit world and seeks the help of one of the oldest spirits, in hopes of saving one of the most prominent areas of the world. Meanwhile Iroh gets a lethal rash so Zuko and Iroh head to a small Earth Kingdom town for help, hoping their real identities will not be discovered.
Aang awakens to find himself aboard a captured Fire Nation ship with a full head of hair and with serious injuries from the battle in Ba Sing Se. At his side are Toph, Katara, Sokka, and their father Hakoda who recount the events that led the four to the ship and together they contemplate their next move. Aang struggles with the fact that the world thinks he is dead and his own desire to face the Fire Lord before he is ready. Meanwhile, the once exiled Prince Zuko deals with his own issues as he makes his long-awaited journey back to the Fire Nation, and wonders what is now in store for him.
To better blend in as Fire Nation citizens, Aang enrolls in a Fire Nation school, giving himself an opportunity to learn more about the Nation while at the same enjoy life as a normal kid for the first time since he discovered he was the Avatar. Meanwhile Zuko, growing more and more paranoid about the Avatar's false demise, brings himself to confront his imprisoned uncle.

Zuko also arrives determined to claim his prize.

The library is guarded by the knowledge spirit, Wan Shi Tong, who doesn't welcome humans into his library, because he believes they only seek information for evil purposes. When Wan Shi Tong discovers Sokka wasn't being truthful with him, he begins to sink the library, bringing the kids down with it. Will everyone be able to escape the library in time? And who are the strange benders who are trying to kidnap Appa?

We go back in time to the moment Appa was kidnapped by the Sandbenders while Aang and the others were inside Wan Shi Tong's Library to see all of the adventures the poor bison has had, including his adventures with some special friends.
Aang and his friends continue to search for Appa and, unbeknown to them, they aren't the only ones looking for him. During their search, the kid's meet up with Jet, whom they are understandably reluctant to trust. The kids soon realize that the Dai Li are doing their best to thwart the kids efforts to find Appa. Meanwhile, Uncle Iroh is offered his own tea shop in the upper ring, and Zuko discovers the Avatar is in the city.
Tired of all the interruptions, Aang and the other force their way into the Earth King's palace. Once in they try to prove they are his allies and there is indeed a war taking place and they need his help. In order to convince him, they take him to various sites around Ba Sing Se to prove themselves. Meanwhile, Zuko is going through a horrible sickness.
With the plans to invade the Fire Nation finally underway, everyone begins their own respective missions. Aang receives guidance from Guru Pathik at the Eastern Air Temple, Sokka is reunited with his father, Katara begins to help the Council of Five plan the invasion, and Zuko and Iroh begin to settle into the new lives of owning a tea shop. However, things are not what they seem. Toph has been captured and is being brought back to her parents, and Azula has infiltrated the city and is planning on finally conquering Ba Sing Se for the Fire Nation. Will Azula succeed? Will Toph escape, and will Aang finally master the Avatar State?

When Katara finally decides to participate in this scam to disprove Toph's accusations, the gang is left vulnerable and are forced to face dire consequences.

Aang and his group finally arrive at the Western Air Temple. There, they meet a repented Zuko, who offers to join their ranks. But acceptance of their former enemy's intention is not in their plans. Zuko has a hard time trying to earn everyone's trust, however, another unexpected encounter might change his chances.
While teaching Aang Firebending, Zuko finds that he has lost all of his Firebending skills. Now, to regain his powers, Zuko and Aang must seek the original source of Firebending within the ruins of a lost civilization.
Sokka is haunted by the decisions he made during the invasion plan, and feels the need to regain his honor. With the help of Zuko, Sokka travels to the highest security prison in the Fire Nation, The Boiling Rock. Disguised as guards, they search the prison, until one of them is revealed. With time running out, Sokka needs to decide if he should cut his losses and leave, or try to finish what he started.
Sokka has found his father, but with one escape plan failure, he doesn't know if there's another way off the island. Luckily, with his father, Suki, and Chit Sang at his side their new plan soon comes together, but will they be able to execute if before Azula arrives? Meanwhile, Mai arrives at the prison and confronts Zuko about what happened on the day of the invasion.
Azula attacks the Western Air Temple, forcing everyone to flee. At the next campground, Zuko asks Sokka about the day his and Katara's mom was killed. He reveals that he knows who killed their mother. He tells Katara, and the two set out to find him. But will Katara be able to keep her cool when she meets him or will she go too far
With only a few days until the arrive of Sozin's Comet, the gang decides to stay at Zuko's family's summer home on Ember Island. They find out that there is a play about them and all their past adventures, and decide to atttend. Meanwhile, Aang tells Katara how he feels about her, but the response is ambiguous.
Sozin's Comet is only three days away. Zuko tells the others what the Fire Lord plans on the day of the comet and the gang realizes that they must stop him before then. But Aang doubts that he can do what is expected of him.
Aang awakes on a mysterious island and confronts his past lives for advice on how to stop the Fire Lord without killing him. The rest of the group searches for Aang.
Zuko battles his sister with Katara's help for the right to be named Fire Lord. Elsewhere, Aang meets Ozai just as the comet arrives.
Aang's moment of truth arrives. Can he defeat Ozai, the Phoenix King? Will he be forced to take a human life? All the characters face their greatest challenges.
