
Since opening in 1971, the Kennedy Center has continued its efforts to fulfill his vision-presenting the greatest performers and performances from across America and around the world, nurturing new works and young artists, and serving the nation as a leader in arts education.


The 36th Annual Kennedy Center Honors -- Opera singer Martina Arroyo, pianist, keyboardist, bandleader and composer Herbie Hancock, pianist, singer and songwriter Billy Joel, actress Shirley MacLaine and musician and songwriter Carlos Santana will receive honors.

This year's honorees are singer Al Green, actor Tom Hanks, ballerina Patricia McBride, singer Sting and comic Lily Tomlin; host Stephen Colbert.

Entertainers receive recognition at the annual ceremony; this year's honorees are singer-songwriter Carole King, filmmaker George Lucas, singer Rita Moreno, conductor Seiji Ozawa, and actress Cicely Tyson; Stephen Colbert hosts.

The honorees for 2016 will be Argentine pianist Martha Argerich, rock band the Eagles, screen and stage actor Al Pacino, gospel and blues singer Mavis Staples and musician James Taylor.

The honorees for 2017 will be singer Gloria Estefan, television writer and producern Norman Lear, rapper and actor LL Cool J, actress and dancer Carmen de Lavallade and singer Lionel Richie.

Honorees for 2019 will be R&B collective Earth, Wind & Fire, actress Sally Field, singer Linda Ronstadt, children's television program "Sesame Street" and conductor and musical visionary Michael Tilson Thomas.

Honoring Debbie Allen, Joan Baez, Garth Brooks, Midori, Dick Van Dyke.

Honorees for lifetime artistic achievements: operatic bass-baritone Justino Díaz, Motown founder, songwriter, producer, and director Berry Gordy, Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, legendary stage and screen icon Bette Midler, and singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell.

In a star-studded celebration on the Kennedy Center Opera House, the 2022 Honorees including George Clooney, U2, Gladys Knight, Amy Grant, and Tania León will be saluted by today's leading performers from New York, Hollywood, and the arts capitals of the world. They will accept the recognition and gratitude of their peers through show stopping performances and emotional tributes.

The 46th Annual Kennedy Center Honors celebrates the lifetime of contributions to American culture from the five honorees.

CBS presents The 47th Annual Kennedy Center Honors, an entertainment special celebrating lifetime artistic achievement in a star-studded celebration at the Kennedy Center Opera House stage.
