
Overview
Gesine Cresspahl, who lives in New York, tells her eleven-year-old daughter Marie the family history between 1967 and 1968. In flashbacks she describes the time in Germany before and during National Socialism and the early GDR. She also draws on events that took place before she was born. The following aspects are important in the story: On Kristallnacht, Gesine's mother commits suicide, her father spies for the British army during the war and is imprisoned by the Soviets in the Fünfeichen camp for several years after the end of the war. After the founding of the GDR, Gesine and her lover Jakob are put under pressure by the Stasi because they do not want to fulfill certain orders. Finally Gesine emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany and then to the USA.
