The Long Call follows Detective Inspector Matthew Venn, who has returned to live in a small community in North Devon with his husband. It's a place Matthew walked away from 20 years ago, after being rejected by his family who are part of the area's Barum Brethren community. We meet Matthew outside the local church as his father's funeral takes place. Now he's back, in the place where it all began, not just to grieve for his father but to lead a shocking murder investigation.

When a body is found on a beach in Devon, DI Matthew Venn and his team search for a way into a case that has no witnesses, no forensics and seemingly no motive. Matthew is also dealing with the death of his father and being thrust back into a community he was forced to leave.

Matthew and the team continue to hunt for clues about the victim, and uncover secrets from the past and theorise who might have motive to murder. Connections are made between the victim and the Brethren community when it's uncovered that the victim had started attending meetings, while, closer to home, Matthew and his mother look to build bridges after years of silence.

The prospect of rebuilding a relationship with his mother blurs Matthew's ability to objectively examine the Brethren community, and he wrestles professional and personal issues to solve the case before anyone else gets hurt. Lucy and Gaby can no longer stay quiet as an important silence breaks and the extent of the lies suffocating the communities continues to widen.

Despite key breakthroughs, the team are frustrated until an important piece of evidence sets Matthew on the path to finding the murderer. Through learning to let go of the shame his upbringing taught him, Matthew finds clarity on the true events surrounding the murder at Crow Point. Matthew has a chance to solve the case with the killer in his sights, but he must be careful knowing someone else is in danger. In the clear light of day, the crimes of the past are laid out for all to see.
