Overview
It is adapted from the novel of the same name by Liu Xinwu, who won the first Mao Dun Literature Award. On the central axis of Beijing, there are nine households in a courtyard near the "Bell and Drum Tower". Every family here has its own "sutra" that is difficult to recite. The story unfolds the conflicts and emotional entanglements between various families through the plot of the Xue family marrying their daughter-in-law in one day. The characters in the play include state cadres, people's teachers, literary editors, and college students, as well as martial arts boxers, Peking opera celebrities, street women, self-employed people, and rag pickers. The whole play narrates the joys, sorrows and joys of ordinary people and their longing for a better future. It has a strong flavor of Beijing's urban life and is a true portrayal of the life of Beijingers in the 1980s...
