The Bakers visit the Beamish Living Museum, where Matt gets a crash course in driving a 1900s tram and sees how an entire farmhouse has been moved stone by stone. Janice gets to take a Shetland pit-pony for a walk and the family get a busman's holiday lending a hand with some stubborn pigs on a 1940s farm.
The Bakers enjoy a trip around Durham Cathedral. Matt visits a nearby quarry to help blast stone used to refurbish the cathedral itself before braving the freezing waters of the River Wear for an underwater treasure hunt. Bird enthusiast Mike gets up close and personal with the owls in the cloisters and meets the craftspeople lovingly conserving the building, while Janice helps to create one of the cathedral's new tapestries.
The Bakers head to Hexham, home to one of the most scenic racecourses in the country. Matt is off the stables and saddles up for a ride on a winning horse, while Janice gets involved in training dogs for the emergency services before helping to round up the resident sheep from the home straight.
The presenter and his parents explore the north of England by caravan. In the opening episode, they visit Lindisfarne, home to important monuments, heritage crafts and rare wildlife. After visiting the historic castle, the Bakers get a taste of island life at Lindisfarne's only distillery, and investigate the traditions behind its upturned herring boat huts. Janice helps out in a walled garden created by a trailblazing female horticulturist.
In Thirsk, the Bakers are given a special tour of James Herriot's home by his son Jim, and Matt takes to the skies for a stunning aerial view of the county by glider. Janice meets the town's yarn-bombing guerrilla knitters and visits a stunning lavender farm with Matt. Finally, the Bakers take in what Herriot dubbed the finest view in England, at Sutton Bank.
The Bakers are greeted by the Duchess of Northumberland on a visit to Alnwick Castle, where Matt is granted special access to the records tower, which holds precious documents detailing itss role in major historical events. Janice follows in the footsteps of the castle's archers of old, trying her hand with a bow and arrow in the grounds, and the family meet the Duke's official piper for the ultimate lesson on the ancient Northumbrian pipes.
Matt, Mike and Janice head to County Durham's Bowes Museum, where they pick an ancient artwork to hang on the walls and bring a marvellous mechanical swan back to life. Elsewhere in Teesdale, Matt and Janice help prepare rare Teeswater sheep for shearing, while Janice gets the ultimate guide to the wildflowers growing in the surrounding Dales.
The Bakers explore Northumberland's Ford and Etal estates, where they meet a flock of rare four-horned Hebridean sheep and help maintain one of the country's few working watermills. Janice hitches a lift in a sidecar during a vintage motorcycle run, and the family gets up close and personal with the residents at one of the north of England's largest stables of heavy horses.
The Bakers head to Co Durham's Ushaw House, where they're given an exclusive glimpse of a largely unknown collection, including priceless treasures buried with a saint, rare clothes from an ancient royal wardrobe and the spellbinding artistry of the buildings. They also help out in the grounds, immerse themselves in the site's annual 1940s day, and head out into the Durham Dales to help weigh baby alpacas on a nearby farm.
Matt, Janice, Mike and Archie head to the Northumberland County Show, north-east England's biggest annual rural festival, this time accompanied by Archie the puppy. They get to a behind-the-scenes peek at what it takes to put on such a massive event, help prep some of the award-winning animals, and enter Archie into two of the categories.
Matt, Mike and Janice head down by the riverside in Durham for one of the biggest events in this historic city's social calendar - the 191st Durham Regatta. Elsewhere, the family explore some of the wonders of the regatta's historic surroundings, discover the secrets of Durham Castle, and get a lift in a rare vintage car to see the exotic wonders housed in the wonderful Durham University Botanic Garden.
Matt, Janice and Mike head to historic Cragside house and gardens in Northumberland, the original smart home powered by ingenious 19th-century hydro-electric inventions. Janice and Matt get to grips with a Victorian dishwasher, while at Cragend Farm, the Bakers discover an agricultural machine which inspired the design of London's Tower Bridge.
The Bakers visit England's original seaside resort, Scarborough - a favourite of Mike's from his youth and a place filled with fun, sun and history. The family pitch up at Scarborough Spa and are wowed by its continental-style Sun Court, the home of Britain's last professional seaside orchestra. Down on the promenade, they head to the Harbour Bar, Yorkshire's oldest ice cream shop.
