Overview
A biographical drama based on the real adventures of the Czech painter Jaroslav Čermák, famous for his paintings especially in Montenegro. The painter Čermák loves Hyppolita, the wife of his teacher Gallait. The lovers run away, but eventually she returns and the husband has the woman locked up in a sanatorium. Čermák is trying to get his painting "Hussites defending the border passes" into the famous French Salon. After returning from the sanatorium, Hyppolita returns to Čermák, even though her husband forces her to reject him. Čermák gets his work into the Salon and stands at the head of the patriotic movement. After an adventurous night voyage, he brings Victor Hugo's manuscripts from exile. At the same time, he supports the Montenegrin resistance against the Turks and is determined to fight alone in Montenegro. The complicated love between the painter and Hyppolita goes through many vicissitudes, the lovers even break up for a while, but on the day of Čermák's departure to Černá Hora, Hyppolita leaves her husband for good...
