Overview
Television production of a play by the German author Gerhart Hauptmann, in which the author depicts the moral and physical decline of a family. Seventy-year-old businessman Mathias Clausen believes that after his wife's death, he will find happiness and love with young Inken Peters, the daughter of a gardener. Their relationship does not remain a secret for long even to his children. After Clausen's decision to take Inken as his wife, his children seek to disenfranchise him. They mask their fear of the family property by pretending to worry about the social disqualification of the father and the dishonor of the mother's memory. The plots end in tragedy - in despair over a world in which idealists and humanists have no place, Clausen takes his own life.
