Overview
In the worst moment of the war, three aviator friends obtain leave and go to Rome. In the hotel where they are staying they meet Maria, a young singer. Left alone with the woman, one of the three, Captain Rastelli, tries to use violence on her but the arrival of the military chaplain prevents him. The officers return to the airport where they receive the order to be ready for the night, but Rastelli finds a way to go out and see Maria again who not only forgives him, but tells him she loves him and insists on going with him. It's late now: German troops surround the airport. Rastelli is wounded and miraculously manages to get on his plane which, attacked by German fighters, arrives at its destination with Rastelli's two dead friends on board and himself dying. Later in a military cemetery, during the funeral celebrated by the chaplain, Maria arrives and mixes with the family, animated by a feeling that life's events have made pure.
