Overview
The serf Roman, his faithful servant, serves as a forester on Pan Ivan’s estate. Roman catches the peasant Mikhas in the master's forest, who killed a fox (he and his little son are starving), and takes him to the master. The gentleman has guests. They are entertained by Opanas - a free peasant, a gentleman's singer. As a reward for his beautiful singing, the pan promises to fulfill his every desire. Opanas asks to give freedom to his bride, the cowgirl Oksana. The girl's beauty impresses the lord and his guests, especially the lord Anthony, who asks to give him Oksana in exchange for a pack of dogs. But Mr. Ivan has other plans. He sends Opanas to the Grodno governor to sing at the feast, and during his absence he takes possession of Oksana by force, and then decides to give her as a wife to the forester Roman...
