An old teacher Ekaterina Pegrovna lives in a distant village. Her only daughter Nastya works in Leningrad at the Union of Artists. Due to her constant busyness, Nastya never manages to visit her sick mother... Ekaterina Petrovna is looked after by a kind and sensitive old man, Tikhon, and a girl, Manyushka. One day, during the grand opening of an exhibition of works by a young talented sculptor, Nastya is given a telegram from Tikhon, which talks about the serious state of her mother’s health...
