Overview
Frédéri loves the Arlésienne (who never appears on stage) and asks her to marry him, disdaining Vivette's love. But the Arlesian woman belongs to someone else: a horse keeper can prove that she is his mistress. Desperate, Frédéri stubbornly pushes poor Vivette away. To see him happy, his mother would go so far as to welcome the lost woman into her home. Then Frédéri, moved, changes his mind and decides to marry Vivette to give his mother a daughter-in-law worthy of her. However, his love is not extinguished: no sooner does he learn that the jealous horse keeper has decided to kidnap the Arlesian than he feels his passion rekindle and Vivette barely prevents him from killing his rival. Unable to control his crazy jealousy, Frédéri kills himself. This painful love adventure is also an evocation of Provençal life.
