This medium-length film directed by Geraldo Sarno documents the impacts of the prolonged drought and the land issue on the living conditions of peasants and indigenous people in the Brazilian Northeast. If, on the one hand, it denounces the social situation of hunger, misery and child mortality in the backlands, with tragic scenes that record the burial of a child, reserved for children under 13 years of age, and refugees on the way to Fortaleza, Ceará, A terra burn also documents the struggle of the Pankararé Indians for the right to demarcate their lands in Bahia and the work of base communities in the backlands, supported by the Catholic movement of Liberation Theology. Co-produced with the Radio Canada Society, The Earth Burns is part of a set of ten films sponsored by the UN (United Nations).
