Overview
Paulchen, a Berlin pensioner with a heart and a quick mouth, feels alienated and superfluous after the death of his wife in the modern home of his daughter Brigitte and son-in-law Bernhard. Only his grandson Thomas, a student, understands the uprooted old man and ensures that Paul can return to his own apartment. But even there, the loneliness hits his heart. He is taken to a hospital and placed in the intensive care unit. A pacemaker, but even more so his affection for the charming doctor Dr. Trautmann get him going again. His plan to visit her all dressed up on her birthday after his release ends in a vain wandering through Berlin. Disappointed and weakened by the exertions of the long journey, Paul ends up in the local bar of young motorcyclists who look after him in a rough but warm manner.
