During World War II, a British military transport ship, the HMS Rayleigh, sailed in the Indian Ocean loaded with anti-fascist arms. Except for the captain and a few crew members who are British, the chief engineer, bosun, second mate, etc. are all Chinese. Chief Engineer Zhuang Haiquan's son, Second Officer Zhuang Sangen, his fiancée Tang Mei, and Hai Shihua, a Chinese fisherman who was living in a foreign country, also returned home on this ship. Unexpectedly, the ship was attacked by an enemy ship and sank. The captain and some crew members died. Chief Engineer Zhuang Haiquan led the surviving crew members to drift to a dead island. Since there is no fresh water on the island, everyone can only divide the few remaining barrels of fresh water a little bit every day to sustain life. Mechanic Li Yingmin grabbed water because he couldn't bear the pain of water shortage, and was scolded by everyone. Facing death, the British crew member Paul could not bear it and committed suicide. In search of food, Hai Shihua tasted the leaves and died of poisoning. The second officer, Zhuang, was also greedy for life and feared death. He stole the remaining fresh water and food late at night and planned to escape by boat with his lover Tang Mei, but was rejected. He did not listen to Tang Mei's advice and escaped by boat alone. Zhuang Haiquan raised his gun and painfully punished his biological son who was sentenced to escape. In order to make up for the mistake of grabbing water, Li Yingmin successfully experimented with using an air pontoon to distill fresh water, which solved the problem of drinking water for everyone and allowed them to take a bath. In order to survive, everyone was vying to go to sea to deliver the message. Boatswain Zhang Shuihou suggested using lots to decide the candidate. Zhang Shuihou picked stones according to the number of people, and only marked one stone for everyone to catch, but none of them could catch it accurately. Zhang Shuihou clutched the last pebble tightly, showing a confident look that he had caught it correctly. Everyone believed it to be true, but Zhuang Haiquan took a look at the stone and found that there was no mark on it. He immediately understood Zhang Shuihou's intention and admired the noble character of this comrade who shared life and death through thick and thin. Zhuang Xing's wine was poured into the sea, and people watched Zhang Shuihou go out to sea to deliver the letter. Time passed day by day, huge waves crashed on the beach, and everyone's hope turned into disappointment. All they expected was a broken ship plank drifting from a distance. The wooden rafts for the second trip out to sea were nailed again. Everyone watched with the same mood as Tang Mei and Ou Sijin went out to sea, and their figures gradually disappeared into the sea. The waves knocked off the sails and pushed the raft into the rough waves. They were dizzy and fainted again and again, and finally reached the place where the mail bottles were placed. They put out the mail bottle containing the distress letter, completed the task, and sang the fishing song calmly and happily. The wooden rafts were floating and beating in the vast sea, and the red life jackets were particularly dazzling on the water. The rumble of the plane finally came from the dead island. This sound brought people hope of life, and everyone was in joy. However, Zhuang Haiquan called the names of Tang Mei and Ou Sijin to the sea. This shout shocked everyone's heart.
