Overview
After "A Board Apart" (1952), Zhu Shilin adapted the drama "Wind and Rain in China" and continued to depict the life of a multi-family cabin in Hong Kong in the 1950s. Because of the lack of material, several families living in the same house are like divided kingdoms. They are in trouble all day long over small things such as storing water, cooking, drying clothes, paying electricity bills, etc. Some of them even betray their relatives, while others steal with dignity. The harsh and tit-for-tat dialogue continuously creates comic effects, and the characters' situations reveal the overwhelming bitterness of life. Zhu Shilin handles the small space and the complicated personnel affairs in a clear-cut manner, and the trivial matters arise one after another and are intertwined. The last small fire made everyone support each other. In the end, the selfishness of human nature cannot outweigh the human touch.
